The Lotus of My Life
Brandy, 14 “The Lotus flower represents my life in so many ways. It starts off as a seed in the bottom of a pond, in the mud and nasty stuff. As it starts to grow, it comes up out of the mud and darkness to the top of the pond where everyone sees how it blossoms and becomes beautiful. This flower helps me to believe that no matter what, I can grow up into a beautiful and successful person. I had a bad childhood and now I am adopted. I am growing up and I am becoming a better person every day." |

Life
Natasha, 13
“Since I’m in foster care, I can be placed wherever they put me and there are struggles to go through. The turtle carries her home on her back, and so do I. I need to learn to be at home wherever they place me. If you’re going to be placed somewhere, you want to be at home, don’t you?
“The turtle is nonviolent, and sometimes I do feel that I have to fight, buts since others are making decisions for me, it’s best to be peaceful, take my homes and my thoughts with me. You have to make good choices; that’s life.” |

The Reef
Caegan, 12
“I have always loved art – all kinds – and started drawing when I was two or three. I’ve been mostly painting in the last two or three years, but I love sculpting, too. I really like acrylics, but I want to try oils sometimes. I love animals, and I’m proud of who I am! I love to paint!
“I did this piece on my very first art night at Family Service & Guidance Center. The class was so much fun! The piece started to be a prairie scene – that’s what I intended – but the farther along I got, the more I saw a reef. I think it was the plants and the colors. Anyway, that’s where it got its name.”
