History

Family Service and Guidance Center (FSGC) has been helping Kansans in Shawnee County since 1904, when the Associated Charities was formed to meet the needs of victims of the disastrous 1904 flood. As our agency has grown, we have changed to meet the needs of children and families in our area.

In 1904, the Associated Charities merged with Social Settlement Works to form the Topeka Provident Association (TPA). Norris Gage, the principal benefactor, purchased a building at Fourth and Jackson, which housed a day care center, a boys’ gymnasium and a girls’ cooking school. In 1910, the TPA served 8,125 people, gave relief to 367 families, and provided housing to 520 homeless people.

The 1940s brought a shift from a charitable organization providing health welfare needs to a social service agency. In 1951, TPA became Family Service of Topeka. Seven years later, Family Service of Topeka merged with the Shawnee Guidance Center, which was established in 1950 to provide training opportunities for psychiatrists, thus creating Family Service and Guidance Center.

In 1968, FSGC entered into a formal alliance with Shawnee Community Mental Health Center to develop a community mental health delivery system that would provide a comprehensive range of mental health services to the citizens of Shawnee County. In 1984, FSGC committed itself to specializing in the provision of mental health services to children, youth and families.

FSGC now offers a number of specialized services, including outpatient psychotherapy services, child sexual abuse treatment, support group treatment programs, preschool and youth day treatment programs, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) program, case management, pre-hospitalization screening, pharmacotherapy, and a range of specialized services for children and adolescents experiencing severe emotional disorders.
