Family Service and Guidance Center's Early Childhood Intervention Program is a comprehensive treatment program for children birth to six years of age who are experiencing difficulties with their emotional or behavioral development. Many times these are preschoolers who have been unable to participate in community daycare centers or preschool programs due to their problem behaviors or high level of emotional needs.
ECIP includes the following:
- Full-day therapeutic groups
- Half-day therapeutic groups
- Kindergarten-aged groups
- An array of outpatient services, including individual and family therapy, case management and psychiatric services
- Consultation services for daycare providers and preschool teachers in our community
A typical preschool program works with children on learning numbers, letters and colors. FSGC's Preschool Development Center is unique in that they work on skills like communication, peer relationships, listening, attending, appropriate problem solving, self-soothing techniques, relaxation and complying with the group's expectations. These are all valuable skills for helping our clients be more successful when they reach the age where they will enter school. We are proud of the fact that for over 20 years, 80% of our children that complete the program to go on to succeed in school without the need for special education services.
We have a strong collaborative relationship with many of the other programs in the community for preschool-aged children so that we can offer our clients the opportunity to remain in their own homes, schools and communities.
In our half-day therapeutic groups, children participate in a community program, such as daycare or preschool, for half the day and come to FSGC for the other half of the day to continue to work on their social skills. Our collaborative partners include Sheldon HeadStart, Community Action HeadStart, Parkdale Preschool and the USD 501, Topeka Public Schools' at-risk preschools.
In ECIP, we support the families in improving their family's functioning just as we do the children. Because of that, we have a full array of outpatient services including family therapy, individual therapy, case management, and psychiatric services.
FSGC is also pleased to have been awarded a grant which allows our staff of early childhood development professionals to provide free consultation to daycare providers and preschools in our community that will enable them to better meet children's social and emotional needs and enhance their sensitivity and skill in dealing with the children. The grant also allows FSGC to provide educational presentations to parents to provide them with information on early childhood development and mental health issues.
