Postmaster's Fellowship Program

The fellowship is designed to provide a year of specialized experience for master’s level social work practitioners to aid in the development of clinical and professional skills. The program consists of clinical work, supervisory, and educational opportunities which together provide an experience rich in learning opportunities. The program is based in a mental health center which provides community based services to a broad range of clientele – varying widely across the diagnostic and socioeconomic spectrum. The agency specializes in services to infants, children, and adolescents and their families.

Fellowship: “The FSGC Post Master’s Fellowship prepares fellows to function as professional social workers capable of delivering ethical, comprehensive, and empirically validated treatment and effective mental health services to children and their families

Goals for Fellowship Training

Fellows will become experienced in delivering a range of clinical services including individual, group, and family therapies, psychosocial treatment, play therapy, and intake and clinical assessment procedures.
Fellows will increase their theoretical knowledge base in such areas as child development, child psychopathology, various clinical theoretical perspectives, and cultural, ethnic, and socio-cultural issues.
Fellows will acquire an appreciation and understanding of the unique roles and scope of services in an outpatient Community Mental Health setting. This will include learning about functioning of traditional outpatient services and in comprehensive Community Based Services. This will also involve learning about multidisciplinary team functioning with a variety of professionals - therapists, medication personnel, case managers, psychosocial group leaders, parent support staff and school personnel.
Fellows will gain an understanding and an appreciation of problems faced by children and families from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and encompassing a variety of diagnostic conditions.

Clinical Work Component

Evaluation and Assessment – Fellows conduct intake assessments, including an evaluation of client needs, diagnostic assessment, and development of treatment plans, goals and objectives.
Psychotherapy – Fellows will see individuals in ongoing therapy processes. This will include traditional individual therapy, play therapy, family therapy, and the use of pyschoeducational approaches.
Group Therapy – Fellows can be involved in traditional process oriented group therapy, in social skill building group therapy, and in activities based group therapy.

Supervision Component

Individual Supervision – Fellows will receive 2 hours of individual supervision per week. They will be assigned a primary and secondary supervisor
Clinical Treatment Team – Fellows are assigned to a clinical team. The team meets for 2 hours weekly. Additionally, the team leader provides administrative supervision.
Group work- Fellows will receive 1 hour per week supervision of group work. This is done in a group format.

Educational Component

Didactic – 2 hour weekly educational meeting covering a variety of topics from four broad areas: Clinical Skills, Ethics, Multicultural Studies, and Professional Development.
Family Therapy Seminar - Three hours per week consisting of theoretical discussions, case presentations and live supervision.
Infant Psychiatry Research Project – two hour weekly discussion and case presentation of issues pertinent to early childhood interventions.

Agency Information

Family Service & Guidance Center of Topeka Kansas (FSGC) is a private, non-profit community mental health center (CMHC). It has a one hundred year history of providing service to the Topeka community. Currently it provides a range of services for children and youth age birth to 18 and their families. The services include traditional outpatient services, i.e., therapies and medication management and emergency services. It also provides intensive Community Based Services (CBS), i.e., case management, day treatment programs, and psycho-educational groups. Specific agency programs include the following: Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Program, Center for Learning Disorders, Early Childhood Intervention Program, Eating Disorders Program, Emergency Services, Support Groups, and Youth Development Center.

Compensation Information

Postmaster’s fellows receive a stipend of $19,000 for the year, nine paid holidays, two weeks annual leave, 5 days of educational leave, $350 for workshop and conference expenses, and one day of sick leave per month. Mileage is available at the rate of 33 cents per mile for travel to clinical and training appointments (not travel to and from work). Medical and dental insurance is available.

Application Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have an MSW degree conferred prior to the start of the fellowship year which runs from the first Monday of June through the last day of May. They must be license eligible in the state of Kansas at the LMSW level. Application is made through submission of a packet including a completed application form, 3 letters of reference from people familiar with your clinical work, and a copy of both undergraduate and graduate transcripts. We also require an onsite interview.
