Promising new service available in Topeka

People of all ages can now get compassionate treatment for eating disorders without having to travel to Kansas City, Lawrence or Manhattan.

FSGC therapist Alissa Osterhaus, LSCSW, CED, has over 2,500 hours of special training. She now helps people of all ages with eating disorders, disordered eating and negative body image.

Weight is hardly ever mentioned in treatment. She said that’s on purpose.

“It’s about the food but it’s not about the food.” Osterhaus said. “Eating disorders are often ways people cope with deeper problems. If there wasn’t a benefit, they wouldn’t do it. So, we talk about all the things behind the person’s eating.”

She also avoids talking about weight because many clients have had bad experiences with professionals who only focused on weight.

Osterhaus said she offers family therapy for some individuals suffering with eating disorders because that added support can be critical.

“For middle and high schoolers, parents play an important role: They buy the food and help with accountability,” Osterhaus said. “For adults, a spouse or partner can offer similar support.”

Treating eating disorders is a passion for her, and Osterhaus looks forward to helping people take back control of their lives.

“I’m happy and excited to provide this important care to our community,” she said.
